PSVita to be Released February 2012

Sony released the shipment date for the PSVita for February 22, 2012 in Europe and the Americas. The handheld was originally slated for a mid-December release in Japan, with no specific release date for other parts of the world.

During the Web 2.0 summit, Sony’s chief executive Jack Tretton revealed the release date as well as confirming the price for both versions. The 3G /Wi-Fi version of the PSVita will be $399.00 and the Wi-Fi only version will be $249.00. Jack Trenton released information regarding wireless carriers that have backed the PSVita as well. AT&T will have the PSVita with a wireless data plan in North America and in Japan DoCoMo will provide the service.

Jack Tretton presented some of the elements of Uncharted for the PSVita as well as boasting the handheld’s new features. Some of these include: allowing players to take pictures and video and upload directly to YouTube, as well as using social networking apps to display those videos and pictures to other users and those within PlayStation network utilizing the PlayStation Near capability.

With the GPS function, players will be able to receive specified DLC packages for attending particular events or game releases. This presents players with another method of receiving DLC codes for special and exclusive content.

Many blockbuster titles have already been lined up for the launch of PSVita and have been shown in an announcement video during E3 2012, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, Hustle Kings, and HotShot’s Golf Next. Not to mention the PSVita will receive new iterations of Killzone, Wipeout 2048, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, Ridge Racer, Reality Fighters, and Call of Duty.

With that line-up, the gaming community will face a very interesting spring. Will the PSVita revolutionize gaming, blurring the division of console and handled? Many have imagined console-quality gaming for on-the-go-play. It will be interesting to see if Sony can truly redefine the handheld device while producing the same quality of games we’d expect from a console title.
